1,000 KILLED SO FAR ON SOUTH AFRICAN ROADS THIS FESTIVE SEASON

The traffic authorities in South Africa’s Western Cape Province have called for a change in behaviour as festive season road fatalities have risen to more than 100 in the province and approaches 1,000 nationwide.

The Provincial Traffic Police Chief, Kenny Africa, said Sunday that 19 motorists had been arrested over the weekend, most of them for drunk driving. Africa said 18 people lost their lives on the province’s roads so far this past Christmas weekend, 13 of whom died in Saturday’s head-on collision between a taxi and a bus near Worcester.

Twelve passengers as well as the driver of the bus were killed in the accident in which a taxi and a bus collided head-on.

In the northern province of Limpopo, two people have lost their lives in separate incidents. A pedestrian has been killed in a hit-and-run incident at a village in the Sekhukhune area and a driver was killed when his car was hit from behind in the provincial capital, Polokwane.

Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Joshua Kwapa said Sunday that more than 80 people had lost their lives in road accidents in the province this festive season.
