The Congress of South African Trade Unions is shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden, tragic passing of Comrade Collins Chabane, Minister of Public Service and Administration and ANC NEC Member, and his two bodyguards, Sergeants Sekele and Lentsoane, in a road accident near Polokwane.
We send our sympathy, condolences and best wishes to the Chabane family, his friends, comrades in the ANC and its alliance parties and people throughout South Africa, and also to the family and friends of Sergeants Sekele and Lentsoane.
Comrade Collins was a committed servant of the people who from an early age devoted his life to the struggle for liberation and a more equal and just society, in exile, in the ANC and in government.
His passing is a huge loss to our movement. COSATU leaders and members at many levels interacted with him over decades and always found him to be friendly, helpful constructive and positive, particularly in the area of making policy and monitoring its implementation. His presence will be missed for years to come and we must never forget the debt we owe him.
