EU, AFRICAN UNION, OIC AGREE TO SEND OBSERVERS TO MONITOR ALGERIA’S MAY 4 ELECTIONS

ALGIERS, Responding to requests by Algeria, the European Union (EU), the African Union (AU) and the Organization of the Islamic Co-operation (OIC) have agreed to send election observers to Algeria to monitor this country’s May 4 legislative elections.

The Chairman of the High Independent Authority for Election Monitoring (HIISE), Abdelouahab Derbal, said in a statement here Wednesday that Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ramtane Lamamra had sent on behalf of Algeria an invitation to the EU for the despatch of observers for the forthcoming legislative elections and the EU had agreed to do so.

“The AU and OIC also accepted the reqyest,” he added, recalling that the Arab League had announced that nearly 110 observers would head for Algeria by late April.

Derbal said that “this shows Algeria’s willingness to ensure fair and credible elections”.
