Government saddened by tragic bus crash

Government has sent its condolences following the death of African National Congress (ANC) members, who were killed in a bus accident between Winburg and Ventersburg on Sunday morning.

Government Communication and Information System on Monday said the ANC members were on their way back from the launch of the party’s election manifesto in Port Elizabeth.

The department’s Acting Director General Donald Liphoko sent government’s condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident. He wished all the injured a speedy recovery.

Law enforcement agencies are working with the Road Traffic Management Corporation in the crash investigation.

“Government calls on all South Africans to be cautious on the roads and avoid negligent behaviour. Motorists are encouraged to work together with government in reducing road fatalities and abide by the rules of the road,” said Liphoko.

President Jacob Zuma has extended his condolences to affected families.

“We are still in deep shock. This is a loss not for the ANC only but the country as a whole. We also extend our condolences to the families of the three people who died when the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed into a river in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

“We are with all the families that have lost their loved ones tragically and in this most painful manner. We urge the nation to keep the families in their thoughts and prayers. May their souls rest in peace,” said President Zuma. –
