Human Trafficking consultative workshop takes centre stage in Cape

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) Western Cape Regional Office will host a Consultative Workshop on Trafficking in Persons on Thursday, 14 July 2016 at the Fire and Ice Protea Hotel in Cape Town.

The workshop will be attended by representatives from the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster as well as civil society organisations.

The purpose of this workshop is to mobilize all stakeholders and community based organizations to work together and find amicable solutions in fighting the scourge of human trafficking.

In addition, the workshop will also serve as an opportunity to raise awareness about trafficking in persons, seen as modern day slavery and to highlight the various pieces of legislation that government has developed and passed in combating this scourge.

In August last year, the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2013 (Act No. 7 of 2013) was signed into law to deal comprehensively with human trafficking in all its various forms. Life imprisonment is the maximum sentencing for convicted traffickers or a severe fine depending on each case brought forward. The Act also enables the state to prosecute traffickers and confiscate their assets.
