Retail stores in Bethlehem to be inspected by the Department of Labour as part of its Workers’ Month programme
In a quest to be as inclusive as possible and reach a sizeable amount of workers and workplaces, no less than eight (8) retail stores in the Metropolitan Mall in Bethlehem will be inspected as part of the May Month activities of the Department of Labour.
These inspections will be feeding into the overall Workers’ Month programme which is intended to elevate worker’s issues and decisively deal with the challenges and concerns afflicting workers on a daily basis.
Of critical importance to note is the fact that some companies have made some strides in trying to adhere to the Sectoral Determination for the Wholesale and Retail (W&R) Sector and other labour laws.
Be that as it may, there is still a significant number of employees in the W&R sector lamenting low salaries as they continue to work under stressful and appalling working conditions.
Thus the Department saw it fit to target retail stores to deal with these purported anomalies head-on. The companies to be inspected include Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks, Cash Crusaders, Sheet Street, Crazy Store, Unique Boutique, Scribbles and Medicine Men’s Wear. All these stores are situated at the Metropolitan Mall in Bethlehem.
These companies will be inspected to check the level of compliance with the Unemployment Insurance Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, Employment Equity Act and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
These inspections will be conducted tomorrow, the 16th of May 2017 from 10h00 in the morning until 14h00 in the afternoon.
Following these inspections will be the Department of Labour exhibition led by Public Employment Services (PES) unit. Coupled with these exhibitions will be the UIF Advocacy Campaign wherein workers’ UIF related enquiries will be attended to.
These PES exhibition and UIF Advocacy Campaign will be held on the 17th of May 2017 at the Bohlokong Community Hall in Bethlehem. Clients are invited to attend as the two units will be providing on-the-spot services to our clients.
