North West on Setsokotsane campaigns

Mayors to lead Setsokotsane 10 by 10 campaigns

The Bokone Bophirima Premier’s Coordinating Council (BBPCC) has resolved that the monthly Setsokotsane 10 by 10 Campaigns must aggressively be led by Mayors across all local municipalities in the province.

This was one of the resolutions of the BBPCC held yesterday, Wednesday 21 June at Christiana All Seasons Resort, during which meeting Premier Mahumapelo charged the local Mayors with the responsibility to fully lead the implementation of the campaigns in their municipalities, as they are faces of government at the local level.

Mayors must ensure that institutions such as churches, schools and community structures, contribute immensely in these people-oriented campaigns because they have a huge potential to maintain stability and resolve most of the challenges facing our municipalities, he said.

The Setsokotsane 10 by 10 Campaign is a programme running from the 10th until the 20th of every month with a series of activities including community meetings by ward councillors, cleaning and environmental activities, VTSD Entrepreneurship Development, obesity campaigns, roads and street light fixing, payment of rates and taxes, crime and corruption prevention, RHR and SaamWerk-SaamTrek, Human Settlement, Water and Sanitation.

Mayors, please ensure that you intensify communication of the programme so that everyone in your communities become involved in these campaigns, he said.

The BBPCC also resolved to establish Inter-Governmental Relations (IGR) Forum which will be constituted by stakeholders from all spheres of government, to ensure integration and acceleration on the implementation of the 10 by 10 Campaigns. The forum will be supported by the deployment of two MECs per district.

The BBPCC held its quarterly meeting to evaluate the extent to which services are being provided to the people through programmes such as municipalities’ Back-To-Basics, Shared Service model and Setsokotsane activities.

Chaired by the Premier of the North West province, Supra Mahumapelo, the meeting is attended by Members of the Executive Council, Executive Mayors and Mayors, Heads of the Department, Municipal Managers, Chief Financial Officers and Chief Executive Officers of the State Owned Entities in the province.

The meeting was held simultaneously with the Provincial Government’s Infrastructure Coordinating Council (PICOCO) which is aimed at having a deliberate focus on infrastructure developments in the province.

The BBPCC and PICOCO received presentations from various departments including Water and Sanitation, Eskom, the South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) and Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

The Premier and the entire collective expressed their satisfaction on most of the reports presented.

On budgeting for the province, the meeting resolved that the provincial government led by the Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development Department must speed up the process of coming up with the Villages, Townships and the Small Dorpies (VTSD) budgeting plans to be implemented in 2018.

It is important that our people know in the bigger scheme of things, the budget of the province and how much is going to be spent in each of their village, township and small dorpie.

This will ensure stability in the province because each village will now know what is going to be done in their community, he said also emphasising that even though it is a huge task, it must still be executed speedily.

The meeting also resolved that an urgent meeting with the Minister of Transport be scheduled in July to come up with drastic solutions on roads infrastructure of the province.

On water, more jobs will be created through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) in municipalities, which will contribute towards save water campaigns in the province.

Water levels of our dams in the province is seating at 88, 2% thanks to the recent rainfall. However we must continue to encourage our people to use water sparingly.

Through jobs created, we must deal with water leaks so that we save as much water as possible. We must also caution our people to stop vandalising water infrastructure, remarked Premier Mahumapelo.
