Premier orders probe into Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Dept

Pretoria: Gauteng Premier David Makhura has authorised a forensic investigation into the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

The investigation – to be headed by the provincial treasury department – will probe allegations of misconduct and maladministration.

“The forensic team is mandated to investigate allegations of financial mismanagement, breach of regulations and Human Resources procedures as well fraud and corruption,” said a statement from the Premier’s Office on Wednesday.

The probe comes after the Premier received information from various officials employed at the department. They alleged maladministration and misconduct.

Similar allegations were also made by the National Education, Health and Allied Worker’s Union in a memorandum sent to the Premier in August.

Since the allegations include the role and conduct of the former MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, who is currently the MEC for Social Development Molebatsi Bopape, the Premier has also referred the matter to the Integrity Commissioner for his consideration.

Premier Makhura said he views the allegations made against the department very seriously.

A preliminary report is expected by mid-December 2015.
