President Jacob Zuma to launch Operation Vula and Raset in KZN

The President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Jacob Zuma will on Tuesday, 27 June 2017, officially unveil KwaZulu-Natal’s groundbreaking policy programme of radically altering its economy for the benefit of Black Africans.

The President will visit Ixobho near Pietermaritzburg where he will lead the launch of Operation Vula and the Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (RASET) programmes interventions by the province of KwaZulu-Natal geared towards addressing the skewed economic make-up of the region through the empowerment of the previously disenfranchised.

Operation Vula seeks to localise the economy by, initially, exploiting the government buying power to buy from SMMEs and cooperatives. It will target specific societal groupings, such as blacks, women, youth and people with disabilities, in the province; align and coordinate enterprises regionally and sectorial; and assist targeted enterprises with skilling, funding and markets.

Through the RASET programme, KwaZulu-Natal seeks to improve the participation by small scale farmers from historically underprivileged communities in the lucrative food production value chain. The initiative endeavors to promote co-operation amongst various government departments with respect to the prioritization of black participants in the agribusiness with respect to access to land and markets.

The President will be joined by members of the KwaZulu-Natal Executive on the visit.
