Public urged to help nab criminals behind robbery of Dutch tourists

Cabinet has appealed to the public to come forward with information that can lead to the arrest of the criminals who robbed Dutch tourists this week.

Thirty-six Dutch tourists were travelling from OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday evening when they were stopped by a South African Police Service (SAPS) marked vehicle, with one man dressed in a police uniform and five others in civilian clothing.

The tourists were robbed of their personal possessions and two of them were reportedly injured and had to be treated by paramedics.

Cabinet appeals to the public to come forward with any information that may assist law-enforcement authorities and calls for the full might of the law to be applied to those found guilty, Cabinet said on Friday.

Cabinet condemned the incident saying such crimes threaten the country’s growing tourism sector.

It called on the South African Police Service to do whatever it can to apprehend the perpetrators.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has instructed a team of seasoned senior detectives from the National Investigation Unit to probe the robbery.
