SOUTH AFRICANS URGED TO REGARD EDUCATION AS TOOL TO FIGHT POVERTY

RICHARDS BAY, SOUTH AFRICA, South African Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has urged parents, community members and students to regard education as an important tool to fight poverty.

Mthethwa has embarked on a Back-to-School campaign at eMbabe Primary School at KwaMbonambi near Richards Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal Province. He is a former pupil at the school which teaches children from Grade R to Grade 6.

Mthethwa on Monday also interacted with teachers, parents and pupils as the school celebrates its 102nd birthday in 2016.

As part of his department’s Flag in Every School campaign, Mthethwa raised the national flag at the school. The campaign is aimed at promoting national identity, nation building and social cohesion.

“The main objective is to celebrate the 102 years since this school was established and also to encourage the young ones that the route they have taken of education and they should continue with that route in remembrance of one of the founders of this very nation, King Dingiswayo, who emphasized hard work.”

School Principal Lindani Hadebe said the school caught the eye of the Minster because of its activities which are based mainly on issues related to arts and culture.

“We were able to catch the eye of the Minister because of our hard work and also to the effect that at the school is serious about issues of art and culture.”
