YOUNG SOUTH AFRICAN COFFEE GROWERS SEEK GOVT SUPPORT

MOROKWENG, SOUTH AFRICA, A group of young “coffee” producers in Tseoge near Morokweng in North West Province is calling on the South African government and the relevant youth development agencies to support them in their project.

The project consists of about 30 volunteers who are making “coffee” out of a tree called Motlopi in the local SeTswana language. The youth dry the taproots of the tree and grind them to make the “coffee”.

Project initiator Kesiile Setlhabetsi appealed to the government to help them with funding to sustain the project which the group hopes will make them the youngest coffee producers in the country.

The aim of having this project is to make sure that it sustains the community and it ended with us going across the community; we really want to ask help from anybody,” he says.

“Commonly it is known as Motlopi in SeTswana. It has played a major part in the lives of the Batswana. This tree serves many purposes that people are not aware of. It is called the tree of life because of its various uses such as food for the people and for soil conservation.
