211 Suspects nabbed through weekend operations

POTCHEFSTROOM – As part of stamping the authority of the State, police in the province arrested 211 suspects between Friday, 20 and Sunday, 22 March 2020, for different crimes through various operations.

Of the 211 arrests, 15 were for contact crimes, which included murder, rape, assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm, common robbery, sexual assault, assault common and attempted rape.

The remaining suspects were nabbed for crimes highly dependent on police action such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and liquor related offences of which 40 were for drinking in public, 10 for being drunk in public and 19 for illegally dealing in liquor. During, the operations, four undocumented persons were taken in for processing. 

Moreover, police seized a variety of items including four pistols, one shotgun, firearm parts, one magazine, one toy gun, one vehicle and liquor. It was during the operations that a total of 100 fines were issued, including 24 for the contravention of the Liquor Act.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Ryno Naidoo welcomed the arrests and indicated that the police working together with other role players will continue with the operations to discourage criminal activities as well as to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book
