27-Year-Old Rapist Jailed for 25years [press release]

30 March 2015. 27 year old Akhona Mpaphela was convicted and sentenced to undergo 25 years imprisonment by the Butterworth Regional Court this afternoon of Monday 30 March 2015. It is alleged that the accused raped a seven year old girl on 20 February 2013 during the evening at Thunga Location Mthwaku Village Ngqamakhwe. The victim was with her younger sister when she was accosted by the accused.

The toddlers were left alone at home by their father who had gone out to look for piece jobs around the village as the mother of the young girls died some time ago. The accused is a neighbour of the young girls and on the evening in question he noticed that their father was not yet home. He then decided to rape the elder sister of the two. The victim noticed him and knew her attacker very well as there was a light outside her home when she was dragged and raped at an open veld not far from her home.

Butterworth Cluster Commander Brigadier Mbeko Sibhidla welcomed the sentence handed to the accused person and hoped that it will serve as a lesson to would be other rapists. He also praised the investigating officer of the Detective Constable Simo ( Dan) Potelwa for his proper investigation of the case which secured stiff sentence of the accused.
