34 year old sentenced to life imprisonment for rape

EASTERN CAPE – SAPS endevours to fight GBV and sexual offenses continue to yield positive results as more heavy sentences are handed down as a result of the quality investigation skills adopted by our dedicated Detectives from the FCS (Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses) Unit.

The efforts of our investigator were rewarded when Molefe Lebohang, aged 34 was sentenced to life imprisonment.

It is alleged that on 6 July 2020 at about 16:00, the victim, aged 7 years (at the time of the incident) was sent by her aunt to drop a parcel at her neighbour.

On her way she came across a male unknown to her who said she must accompany him to the shop to buy airtime.

He will then also buy her ginger biscuits and sweets and she accompanied him to the shop, before they even reached the shop, a lady that knew the little girl saw them and asked her who the man was?

The suspect instructed her not to respond and they continued walking.

The woman distracted him to go to the shop and he then suggested to the little girl that he wanted to show her horses, at that time it was becoming dark.

As they continued walking, the victim was instructed to enter an unused house where the suspect raped her.

After he finished he left the victim in that house alone, the victim ran to a nearby house and the people took her back home and a case was reported.

The suspect was arrested on 20 July 2020 with the assistance of community members that went to search for him until they found him.

He was granted bail and he went back and forth to court until he was sentenced.

On 16 April 2021 the accused was found guilty of rape at the Mount Fletcher Regional court and sentenced to undergo life imprisonment.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga thanked the collaboration between the SAPS and the NPA which led to the lengthy prison term.
