Abalone worth R7 million seized in the Northern Cape

NORTHERN CAPE The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Northern Cape and Western Cape members together with the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, the local Criminal Record Centre and Colesburg Visible police have arrested two foreign nationals aged 38 and 52 for being in possession of abalone.

The team arrested the two suspects on Tuesday after they intercepted their vehicle that was allegedly transporting dried abalone on the N1 between Cape Town and Gauteng. A thorough search of the truck revealed 43 boxes of dried abalone weighing about 860kg valued at approximately R7 million.

They were subsequently arrested and will be charged accordingly pending their court appearance soon.
