The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has commended police and other security agencies who worked round the clock to arrest six men who are responsible for murders in two separate parts of the Province.
Yesterday, Creighton and Ixopo police arrested a 30-year-old suspect for murder and robbery. The suspect was found at his homestead with a firearm and six rounds of ammunition as well as property stolen from the victim’s home including their cellphones. The suspect will be charged and will appear in court soon.
The arrest follows an incident which occurred on 8 September 2018 at 03:00 when a couple at Lyn Avis Farm in Creighton were accosted by three armed males. They allegedly tied the wife and fatally shot a 66-year-old man. The suspects stole laptops and cellphones as well as other items from the house before fleeing the scene. The deceased was identified as Peter Scott (66). A case of robbery and murder was opened at Creighton SAPS. The firearm that was seized had its serial number filed off however it will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if it was used during the robbery and murder. Police are still on the hunt for the remaining suspects.
In another matter, yesterday Detectives from Verulam together with Crime intelligence officers conducted an intelligence driven operation to track down suspects involved in a robbery and murder case. The team struck in various areas including Inanda, Ndwedwe and Cottonlands whilst tracing the suspects. A total of five men were arrested by police officers. Stolen property including cellphones and a motor vehicle as well as various household items were seized from the arrested men. The suspects who are aged between 18 and 30, are expected to make their first appearance at the Verulam Magistrates Court on Friday, 14 September 2018.
These arrests stem from an incident that occurred on 3 September 2018 at 12:00 when police discovered the bodies of a man and woman inside a house at Cottonlands in Verulam. The victims were identified as Dhir Singh (68) and his wife Kay Singh (63). Charges of robbery and murder are being investigated by Verulam SAPS.
I want to commend all those that were involved in the investigation as well as those that were responsible for the apprehension of these criminals. It is totally unacceptable that people are killed for items of such a low value. The police will not rest when people are killed in their own homes by greedy criminals. We will hunt them down and ensure that they are placed before a court to answer for their crimes, said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
