Cape town: The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development has officially endorsed the appointment of Advocate Andy Mothibi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Mothibi, who previously led the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and is set to assume his new role next month.
According to South African Government News Agency, this appointment comes as a pivotal change in the leadership of the prosecuting authority, with Mothibi succeeding Advocate Shamila Batohi, who is retiring later this month. The committee expressed confidence in Mothibi's ability to uphold the independence and integrity of the NPA. Committee chairperson Xola Nqola emphasized the importance of the NDPP's role in maintaining an unbiased and effective prosecuting authority, stating the committee's expectation for Mothibi to prioritize efficiency, integrity, and transparency.
Mothibi's leadership of the Special Investigating Unit has been widely recognized, and his track record has assured the committee of his capability to lead the NPA. Nqola highlighted Mothibi's exceptional leadership skills and reassured that the committee will continue its rigorous oversight of both his and the NPA's work. The committee looks forward to collaborating with Mothibi and other justice system leaders to enhance accountability, justice, and constitutional democracy.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa has appointed Leonard Lekgetho, the current Chief Operations Officer of the SIU, as the acting head of the unit starting in February. Nqola affirmed the committee's commitment to ongoing oversight of the SIU's operations under Lekgetho's temporary leadership.
