AFRICAN UNION DEEPLY CONCERNED OVER TRUMP’S DECISION ON JERUSALEM

ADDIS ABABA, The African Union (AU) has affirmed that the decision of the United States government to recognize Al Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel will only increase tensions in the region and make it difficult to reach a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Chairman of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said here Thursday that the AU noted with deep concern the decision of the American government to recognize Al Quds as the capital of the State of Israel.

Faki regretted this decision which will only increase tensions in the region and make it difficult to reach a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an AU statement said.

Faki reiterated the AU’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and its support to their legitimate search for an independent and sovereign State with Al Quds-East as its capital, added the statement.

In this regard, the head of AU Commission chairman called for renewed international efforts to reach a fair and lasting solution to the conflict, based on the existence of the two States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side, in peace and security, as part of the relevant decisions of the African Union and the United Nations.
