AFRICAN UNION WELCOMES ALGERIA’S ROLE IN RESTORING SECURITY IN AFRICA

ALGIERS, May 19 (NNN-APS) — African Union (AU) Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui welcomed Algeria’s “leading role” in its efforts and its contribution to the re-establishment of the Stability and security, particularly in neighboring countries and the African continent.

“The flagship event recently hosted by Algeria, the first GA of the African Police Cooperation Mechanism (Afripol), has helped to consolidate the African Union and its work for peace and stability in Africa, said Chergui during a conference at the headquarters of the Council of the Nation, in the presence of the President of the Council, Abdelkader Bensalah, highlighting the effectiveness of Algerian diplomacy in resolving the crises that shake certain African countries in such as Libya and Mali.

The contribution of Algeria to the restoration of peace, security and development in Africa resulted in the organization of “the first Afripol AG,” Chergui said, describing the event as “a mechanism Important strengthening of the AU “.

“We are proud of this mechanism that works for security and peace in Africa,” he added, thanking the Algerian people and government and the President of the Republic for this important achievement.

Algeria, it is recalled, was sheltered from May 14 to 16 the work of the first Afripol AG, during which Algeria was elected to head this organization for a two-year term.

He also recalled the “historic decision” taken at the summit of the former Organization of African Unity (OAU, currently AU) held in Algiers in 1999 under the “enlightened” presidency of the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika for “countering coups and attempts to seize power by force,” adding that the decision had “contributed to the stability of the African continent.”

At this conference under the theme “State of peace and security in Africa”, in the presence of members of the government and the diplomatic corps, as well as parliamentarians, Chergui spoke of various conflicts that shake him such as those in Sudan, Somalia, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the situation in Libya.

Addressing the situation in Mali, the African official referred to the peace agreement signed by the Libyan belligerents and “Algeria’s role in this direction”, welcoming the efforts of Algerian diplomacy, which made it possible to an “explosive” situation.

After affirming that the UN Security Council role was important in the implementation of its decisions relating to the restoration of peace and security or those relating to the development of African countries, stressing the importance of the support of the Security Council for Africa’s efforts in this direction.

The United Nations is responsible for 75 per cent of the costs of the peacekeeping mission and it is important to “recall that the responsibility for maintaining peace and security rests with the Security Council, to 100% the costs of its missions in the future, “said Mr. Chergui.

Chergui called on the UN Security Council to support the work of the African Peace and Security Council in restoring stability and crisis resolution in Africa and indeed in the world.
