AI-Driven Cybercrime Poses New Challenges for South Africa

Hanoi:The increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into daily life is transforming the landscape of cybercrime in South Africa. AI, while offering numerous benefits, is also being exploited for cyber deception, raising concerns about the country's readiness to tackle these new threats.

According to South African Government News Agency, The Interpol Africa Cyberthreat Assessment Report of 2025 highlights a significant rise in cyberattacks, resulting in substantial financial and operational impacts on local businesses, government institutions, and consumers. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre reported a 22% increase in cyber breaches and attacks in 2023, with notable rises in phishing, ransomware, and unlawful access to information.

AI advancements have enhanced the sophistication of cyber threats, enabling criminals to create more convincing scams through voice cloning, deepfake videos, and AI-generated phishing messages. These developments necessitate not only stronger technology but also a generation of South Africans equipped to use AI wisely and question the systems in place.

The South African government has already begun initiatives to strengthen cybersecurity awareness and expand digital skills. President Cyril Ramaphosa, at the 18th BRICS Summit, emphasized the need for responsible AI governance, proposing an international mechanism for AI evaluation within BRICS to ensure meaningful human control and robust safeguards.

Public awareness and education are critical in building an AI-literate society. The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) is working to counter misinformation and enhance public understanding of digital deception.

Ultimately, South Africa's approach must focus on protecting people, institutions, and public trust, ensuring AI serves as a tool for empowerment rather than exploitation. The country's efforts today will shape its preparedness for the future challenges of AI-driven cybercrime.
