AK 47 rifle seized from suspects

DURBAN – Hillcrest police with local security officers were conducting an operation last night in their policing precinct to prevent any criminal activities and eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms when they spotted a vehicle with three occupants on Inanda Road. The vehicle was stopped and a search was conducted.

Police confiscated an AK47 rifle with 39 rounds ammunition and a pistol with 11 rounds of ammunition. Three suspects aged between 24 and 30 were arrested. They were charged for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. They will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Further police investigation revealed that the suspects’ vehicle was stolen in Bellair last week and a seized pistol was stolen in Chatsworth in February 2019. The suspects were also charged possession of suspected stolen property. The investigation will be conducted to ascertain if they can be linked to theft of motor vehicle and theft of firearm cases.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula applauded the arrests and recoveries.
