Alleged hitmen arrested in Umlazi

In the early hours of the morning at 04:00, Umlazi Tactical Response Team police officers conducted a crime intelligence driven operation in Umlazi and surrounding areas. The team received information about four alleged hitmen who might be linked to taxi violence incidents reported in KwaZulu-Natal. The police proceeded to the house at J and H Section in Umlazi and conducted a search.

During the search police recovered three illegal firearms, 142 rounds of ammunition and a magazine. A total of four suspects aged between 22 and 30 were placed under arrest. One of the firearms which was recovered belonged to a police official which was reported stolen at Bhekithemba police station. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in commission of serious offence in the province.

The suspects will appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court soon for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
