Awareness campaign address rape and abuse

The ongoing incidents of rape and abuse of young children necessitates ongoing awareness and safety talks.

Since the beginning of this month several cases have been reported where the victims are aged between the ages of 12 to 14. One suspect a 25-year-old male has been arrested and remanded in custody until the 22 February. The remaining cases are still under investigation and with the public prosecutor.

Today, members of the Port Alfred Cluster FCS UNIT held a campaign at the Kuyasa Combined School to address the affliction of rape and abuse of children that is plaguing the community.

During the visit the children were educated on how to keep themselves safe, and not to be afraid to say No! Children were also made aware on the abuse of alcohol and drugs which is a major contributing factor to the raped.

It is not uncommon that victims are afraid to report incidents for various reasons. Namely, if the perpetrator is related, they are ridiculed and not taken seriously or if they were threatened.

The speakers Captain Hazel Siganga and Warrant Officer Simon Siyoli assured the children that they must not be afraid and that all information is treated in a very confidential and sensitive. “Report these incidents to your teachers and do not keep this as a secret, because it is wrong. No one has the right to hurt you. We are here for you. We will help you. If you know of anyone going through this do not be afraid to tell your parent, guardian or your teacher. You are all precious children and need to be protected and not violated, said Captain Siganga.

The children listened attentively and asked questions when the session was over. They interacted with the team.
