Bail granted for fraudster

EASTERN CAPE – Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court released Thembekile Nonqane on R10 000-00 bail on 8 December 2022 for charges of fraud alternatively theft.

It is alleged that on 14 February 2020 the complainant received his pension money amounting to more than R820 000-00 as his medical condition forced him to retire. The complainant is further reported to have asked Nonqane to assist him by driving his vehicle to wherever he wanted to go.

It is further alleged that an amount of more than R620 000-00 was fraudulently transferred from the complainant’s account to another unknown account.

The matter was reported to the Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for probing. The investigations revealed that Nonqane was the account holder of the unknown account in question hence his arrest on 8 December 2022.

The matter was remanded to 19 January 2023 for copies of the docket.

The team is once more given a thumbs up by the Provincial Head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya for the commitment in eradicating such criminal tendencies that leave the vulnerable poverty stricken.
