Banyana Captain Confident Ahead of COSAFA Final Against Namibia

Polokwane: Sasol Banyana Banyana captain Sibulele Holweni believes they have the right mindset to lift the 2025 COSAFA Women's Championship trophy. The South Africans are set to face Namibia in a repeat of the 2006 final, which South Africa won. The match will take place on Sunday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, with kickoff scheduled for 15h00. Holweni leads a team comprised mainly of young players, representing the future of Banyana Banyana, in the absence of many senior and experienced team members.

According to South African Football Association, South Africa has been unbeaten in their journey to the final, having secured victories against Malawi, Angola, Zimbabwe, and drawing with Lesotho. Despite their winning streak, Holweni emphasizes that they will not underestimate Namibia. She highlighted the collective leadership within the team, stating that every player has a role and contributes to the team's success. Holweni expressed confidence in the team's mindset and their shared goal of winning the championship.

Holweni also acknowledged the support from senior players who have been cheering from the stands, emphasizing the positive impact of their encouragement on the team's performance. She noted that the presence of senior teammates boosts confidence and can inspire players to perform better, even when faced with challenges during the game.

South Africa is aiming for its first win in the tournament since 2020, and with a record of seven wins, the team is eager to add another title to their achievements. The final will be preceded by the bronze medal match between former champions Zambia and Zimbabwe, scheduled for midday at the same venue.
