Beneficiaries move into new BelharPentech homes

Over the next few days, 26 beneficiaries will be receiving the keys to their new homes in the Statesubsidised Breaking New Ground BelharPentech housing project. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, was there today, 23 October 2019, to congratulate the first of the new homeowners.

The first beneficiaries of this group, including Christina Fredericks (75) and Elizabeth Siebritz (45), received their homes today.

This project to the value of R55 million will provide 340 beneficiaries with homes and is expected to be completed by June 2020, if all goes as planned. Leading up to this handover, 66 beneficiaries have already received their homes in this project.

‘Becoming a home owner for the first time is a significant milestone in the lives of these beneficiaries. Owning a home means much more to them than having a roof over their heads. It signifies the restoration of dignity to some of our most vulnerable residents.

Our beneficiaries are reminded that as property owners, they are now responsible for their homes, which have become their assets. As such, they are encouraged to maintain their homes and secure them for their loved ones in future by including it in their wills. These homes will improve the living conditions of these beneficiaries and make a difference to their lives by empowering them as property owners. As financial assets, these homes will provide the beneficiaries and their families with security,’ said Councillor Booi.

The project includes the building of semidetached and freestanding singlestorey houses, as well as the installation of electrical infrastructure, street lighting, open spaces and sidewalks.

As a City, we are committed to service delivery and redress through the provision of housing opportunities. In line with this commitment, we are making every effort to ensure the construction of this housing project remains on track so more beneficiaries can receive their homes. As the construction of this housing project progresses, we are looking forward to welcoming more qualifying beneficiaries to their homes over the coming months,’ said Councillor Booi.

A number of other projects to provide housing opportunities to thousands of beneficiaries are also under way across the metro.

The City is working hard to provide housing opportunities to more residents who qualify for housing opportunities. As a caring City, we recognise the need for housing opportunities that are situated on welllocated land near urban centres across the metro, close to public transport, employment opportunities and economic nodes.

‘There are no quick fixes, but we are absolutely committed to building integrated communities with different types of residential developments based on a mix of income groups and circumstances. We are committed to inclusivity and will keep on exploring all possibilities in providing more affordable housing opportunities for our residents,’ said Councillor Booi.
