Benoni Flying Squad members arrest five suspects and recover two firearms

GAUTENG – On Monday at around 19:30, members patrolling the N12 towards Johannesburg at the Daveyton off-ramp pulled over a white Toyota Quantum towing a trailer loaded with scrap metal. A search led to the recovery of suspected stolen copper wires with an estimated value of R30 000-00 hidden amongst other metals. The two (02) occupants could not give a valid explanation and were immediately arrested.
On Thursday evening at 23:25, members patrolling the N12 just after the R555 off-ramp noticed a silver Volkswagen Polo driving recklessly at a high speed. Members pursued the vehicle and managed to pull it over with three (03) occupants in. A thorough search was conducted which led to the recovery of a firearm magazine loaded with live 9mm ammunition inside the vehicle which the suspects could not explain. This prompted members to intensify their search and check the engine bay. Inside the air filter housing, they discovered two (02) unlicensed 9mm pistols. The three (03) suspects were immediately arrested. Upon testing a firearm serial number it was discovered to be reported stolen on a Vosman case from August 2022, the other pistol’s number was filed off.
Investigation continues in these cases.
The suspects aged 27 to 40 years will be appearing in the local Magistrates courts facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property.
