BMA Official Arrested for Fraud and Corruption at Lesotho Border

Maseru:The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr. Michael Masiapato, has confirmed the arrest of a 56-year-old BMA official at the Maseru Port of Entry on the Lesotho border. The arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation by the BMA Integrity Management Unit, Department of Home Affairs Counter Corruption Unit, South African Police Service (SAPS) Ladybrand Detectives and K9 Unit, and Crime Intelligence Free State.

According to South African Government News Agency, the official was allegedly found with 22 stamped passports belonging to Lesotho nationals, although the rightful holders were absent, along with R2,100 in cash. The arrest occurred shortly after the fifth Anti-Corruption Awareness Campaign hosted by the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum at OR Tambo International Airport.

The operation was initiated following information from the State Security Agency about several Lesotho passports being monitored. Intelligence suggested these passports were unlawfully stamped to extend visa validity and stay in South Africa without the holders' presence, leading to the official's arrest.

The suspect is set to appear in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court on charges related to corruption, unlawful possession of passports, and immigration offences. The investigation is ongoing, with further arrests possible.

Since its establishment three years ago, the BMA has seen numerous officials arrested under Masiapato's leadership. He emphasizes the authority's commitment to addressing illegal migration and corruption, highlighting recent disciplinary measures within the organization.

Dr. Masiapato, leveraging his intelligence experience, asserts the BMA's dedication to combating corruption and maintaining the integrity of South Africa's ports of entry, in collaboration with law enforcement and security agencies.
