Call for comments on conversions of roads

The City’s Road Infrastructure Management Department is calling for comments on the proposals to convert various roads surrounding Milnerton Primary School in Milnerton into one-way streets. Read more below:

The City is mandated to give the public and interested parties and/or groups an opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input on proposals about changes affecting their communities, in terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000.

‘Residents have a role to play in government and as an inclusive City, we encourage them to do that by having a say in matters concerning the development of their communities. This will in turn help us deliver services that our residents need,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The commenting period for the conversion of the roads surrounding Milnerton Primary is from Monday,13 June until 13 July 2022.

The City proposes to permanently convert various roads surrounding Milnerton Primary School, Milnerton into a one-way road system.

Reasons for the proposed one-way conversions:

• The traffic circulation along Langerman Avenue, Begonia Street and Graaff Avenue is an issue during peak periods with parked vehicles restricting two-way traffic flow around Milnerton Primary School

• Concern for the lack of formalised drop-off/ pick-up facilities around the school

• Poor traffic circulation due to informal on-street parking

• Residents also find it difficult to access and egress from their respective driveways.

The recommended upgrades include the following:

• Converting Langerman Avenue to a one-way street in a northbound direction, between Arum Way and Begonia Street

• Converting Begonia Street to a one-way street in a westbound direction, between Langerman Avenue and Graaff Avenue

• Converting Graaff Avenue to a one-way street in a southbound direction, between Begonia Street and Zastron Road

• Implementing parallel parking bays along Langerman Avenue (between Arum Way and Begonia Street), Begonia Street and Graaff Avenue

• Raising the existing pedestrian crossing along Zastron Road.

The City will host an Open Day about the above proposals on Tuesday, 21 June 2022 at the Milnerton Primary School hall from17:00 until 20:00, to give residents an opportunity to interact with City officials and ask questions about the proposed conversions. Special assistance will be given to people who cannot read or write, people with special needs and other disadvantaged groups who are unable to submit written comments to have their inputs or comments recorded and submitted to the City.

‘Our commitment is to deliver services that are set to improve the lives of our residents and we are calling on the affected groups to please make use of this opportunity to make their voices heard,’ said Councillor Quintas.
