Cape Town police arrest 38-year-old leader of refugee group housed at the Central Methodist Church

Cape Town police have charged the 38-year-old man following complaints to the police of assault by some of refugees housed in the Cape Town Methodist Church. The suspect who is from Congo is charged with eight cases of assault, five of which are assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm. The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 03 January 2020.

Meanwhile about 50 people believed to be from the Cape Town refugee group descended on Cape Town Central police station this morning after the arrest demanding the release of the suspect. After being advised to leave, the group duly complied and dispersed. Public Order Police members are keeping an eye on the situation.

Cape Town Central police station is operational with no further incidents reported.
