The City of Cape Town donated some kitchen appliances and composting containers to a community feeding project in Khayelitsha last week.

Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, visited the Edyardini Community Development group to hand over a donation of a gas stove, box freezer and composting containers. This is to support the valuable work of this collective in feeding the local community and teaching baking skills to the youth.

The project also involves composting some of the scraps for a food garden that also supplies the project. The total value of donations is R34 000.

‘It is a great pleasure for me to be involved in supporting a project like this. Communities throughout Cape Town are putting a lot of effort into uplifting each other, and the City aims to support many other similar projects throughout this financial year. In the spirit of making progress possible, together, the donations we are issuing are aimed at harnessing the energy and desire within our communities to uplift themselves, and maximising the positive impact they can make in their areas.

‘A gas stove will help the project to operate even in times of load shedding or vandalism-induced power outages, and freezer space will help prevent food or ingredients from going off before they can be used. This will surely help ensure that more people can be fed, and more youth can benefit from the baking training to sell their own goods in future or save money on store-bought goods in future. I would like to thank the Ward Councillor, Councillor Mthwalo Mkutswana and the local community development team for their work facilitating this donation,’ said Alderman Twigg.
