The City of Cape Town today, 7 July 2022, handed over newly repaired units in Langa, which were severely damaged by a fire. The repair work to the Community Residential Units was prioritised and the families moved back into their homes. The City remains committed to improving the lives of residents and is prioritising repair work to fire damaged units across the metro.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and officials in the Human Settlements Directorate inspected the work done and engaged with the beneficiaries.

Eight severely damaged units, which were gutted by a fire in Langa were repaired. City contractors and officials in the Public Housing Department replaced roofing and ceilings, upgraded the kitchen and bathrooms and installed new security doors, among others.

‘We are pleased to hand over the newly repaired units to the families today. Our teams have been working around the clock to ensure that the repairs are completed on schedule and we continue to prioritise repairs to fire damaged units.

‘Winter often presents additional fire risks such as residents using heaters and other heating devices. We ask residents to keep their family’s safety top of mind and to practice fire safety at all times. We thank residents for their patience while we carry out repairs to City owned units across the metro and attend to the most urgent cases first,’ said Councillor Booi.
