The City of Cape Town wants to inform the public that another 116 puffer fish have washed ashore at beaches along the False Bay coastline this morning. The City is currently collecting and bagging the fish for proper disposal. Read more below:

Over 80 puffer fish washed ashore at Long Beach in Simon’s Town yesterday, 30 March 2022. Penguin rangers from Seaforth collected and bagged the fish for proper disposal.

This morning, another 116 puffer fish washed ashore at beaches along the False Bay coastline, among which Muizenberg. The City is busy collecting and bagging these for disposal.

Residents and visitors are reminded not to handle the puffer fish. Those walking their dogs should ensure that their pets do not come in contact with the fish either as it carries the neurotoxin tetradotoxin and should not be consumed.

The City will keep on monitoring the beaches in the Far South in the coming days and will remove the fish, should more wash ashore.

It is unclear what caused the fish washing ashore.
