The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be conducting sewer smoke tests throughout the network, in various residential areas of Gordon’s Bay. Read more below:

The Gordons Bay’s sewer network occasionally experiences capacity problems, especially during rainy periods. It is therefore necessary for the City’s Water and Sanitation Department to conduct an investigation, in order to limit the amount of stormwater ingress into the sewer system. This investigation has started and will continue until 30 August 2019, weather permitting.

In order to locate the points of infiltration, various sewer smoke tests will be conducted throughout the network. Smoke testing is a relatively simple process that consists of blowing smoke mixed with large volumes of air, into the sanitary sewer line, which is done through the manhole. The smoke travels the path of least resistance and quickly shows up at sites that allow for surface water intrusion, or any cross connection between the sewers and stormwater drains.

The smoke is harmless and will disappear after a few minutes. This means that it will not harm your health, or leave a stain and will disappear rapidly without leaving an odour. Residents are urged to refrain from calling the City’s Fire and Rescue Services in instances were smoke exits the manholes or stormwater drains.
