City to resurface Main Rd, Fish Hoek, after Cycle Tour

The City of Cape Town will soon commence with the resurfacing of Main Road in Fish Hoek, one of the busier commuter routes in the Far South. The work on the road itself will commence on 14 March 2022, the day after the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Residents and businesses are kindly requested to note that the work will have an impact on traffic flow and commuting times for about six weeks.

The project will commence on Monday, 7 March 2022, with the first phase focusing on repair work to the channels along Main Road to improve drainage. The replacement of the top asphalt layer will start a week later, on 14 March 2022, after the renowned Cape Town Cycle Tour on 13 March 2022, when thousands of cyclists will be cycling along Main Road.

‘We are extremely excited to host the Cycle Tour along this scenic route and will do everything possible to ensure the safety of the participants and spectators on race day. Those who are familiar with Main Road will know that we completed the major upgrade from Atlantic Road in Muizenberg up to Clovelly about four years ago. Main Road in Fish Hoek was excluded, and the project will now focus on this section,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

It is foreseen that the work will carry on until at least 19 April 2022, pending any delays and inclement weather.

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate will undertake the work between 09:00 and 15:30 on weekdays to minimise the impact on commuters during the peak hour periods.

‘Our Roads Infrastructure Management Department conducted an inspection of Main Road and although the road surface itself is in a poor condition with dips and cracks, the overall integrity of the road infrastructure is still good. We will use a milling machine to remove the aged top asphalt layer, then the road will be resurfaced and fresh road markings applied. The end result will be a smooth road surface, free of any bumps and cracks, which will improve the overall safety of the road and driving experience.

‘We will do the same with the parking bays on both sides of Main Road, as well as with the traffic circle at the top where the road forks to Simon’s Town and Kommetjie. All-in-all this section of Main Road covers a distance of about 1,3km. We are excited to get going. Overall, the project will also prolong the longevity of Main Road,’ said Councillor Quintas.

The work will take place as follows:

• Along Main Road from Clovelly Road to the Fish Hoek traffic circle, every weekday from 09:00 until 15:30

• The project will kick off on Monday, 7 March 2022, with the first phase focusing on repair work to the channels to improve drainage off the road

• The removal of the top asphalt layer will commence on 14 March 2022 at the Fish Hoek traffic circle at the top of Main Road (M4) where it joins the M65 towards Kommetjie

• One lane will be open to traffic at all times and the direction of traffic flow on Main Road will be dependent on the availability of a detour adjacent to the area where work is ongoing

• Parking bays will be available on one side of Main Road for the duration of the works

‘We will do our best to minimise the inconvenience and disruptions. However, residents, businesses, and commuters travelling along Main Road will be impacted as roadworks always come with some degree of inconvenience. I’m asking all to please support the project, and, if possible, to avoid Main Road during working hours while this project is ongoing. Those who cannot avoid Main Road are advised that travelling times will be longer than usual and I request you to please abide by the signage. Once complete the new road will benefit all of us,’ said Councillor Quintas.

They handed out flyers to business owners and motorists, informing them about the project that will commence on 7 March 2022.
