The City of Cape Town’s enhanced cleansing programme is commencing at the Community Residential Units (CRU) in Lotus River, which aims to improve the living conditions of residents. The City launched this programme as a part of its broader CRU maintenance and upgrade programme earlier this year.
Today, 13 December 2022, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements and senior officials in the Human Settlements Directorate attended the handover of the third City CRU for enhanced cleaning and vector control. As part of the City’s ongoing maintenance programme, teams and contractors are carrying out cleansing, vector control and disinfection around rental units. The programme will also be carried out in Ndabeni, Hout Bay, Brackenfell, Scottsdene, Macassar, Strand, Ocean View, Grassy Park and Ottery.
‘This programme has already kicked off in a number of areas where the City has affordable rental accommodation and we are pleased with the work that has been completed thus far right before the holiday season. The enhanced cleansing programme also creates employment for the local entrepreneurs and their employees.
‘The well-being of our residents is our priority and we are doing all we can to improve the lives of all tenants and to ensure their health and safety. This cleansing programme forms part of the City’s enhanced basic service delivery, which aims to create and maintain healthier living spaces for our residents.
‘In the last five years, over 40 000 affordable rental unit tenants have benefitted from R2 billion in maintenance and upgrades. The City has further transferred ownership of over 60 000 of its rental stock units to long-standing tenants to date, with around 7 700 units still available for sale and transfer to eligible tenants. An estimated 160 000 people currently benefit from an affordable rental unit operated by the City,’ said Councillor Booi.
