The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has launched the first of a number of netball legacy programmes. As the Netball World Cup 2023 approaches, the programmes will enhance the sport and encourage youth participation. The first was launched in Nomzamo, Strand, last weekend to ensure netball development continues after the main event. Read more below:
As part of the department’s Netball World Cup legacy programme, a netball afterschool skills programme was held for 30 volunteers and staff from the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), under the guidance of community-based facilitators.
The team’s base was Voortrekker Park Resort and their practice ground was the Nomzamo Community Hall.
The programme was facilitated by Simunye Netball Club, Girls Mission Camp, and Vulture Netball Club.
‘The aim is for those who attend the programme to have fun, make friends, gain comprehensive and functional netball skills, draw confidence through physical activity all while improving their on-court game.
‘There are a number of benefits to playing netball. It improves hand-eye co-ordination, develops depth perception and helps to build up muscle strength and stamina,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
Netball facilitators provided a full netball experience including training tips and various skills.
The focus areas regarding netball programmes for youth include:
• Engaging fitness workouts
• Quality coaching, content and advice
• Nutritional sessions and healthy snack habits
• Match play and game day scenarios
• Leadership, teamwork and wellbeing workshops
Designed for youth who will take part in afterschool initiatives, it will mentor youth leaders and volunteers; and provide them with a comprehensive understanding of netball skills programmes at facilities, raising awareness about the 2023 Netball World Cup leading up to the event in July.
‘Netball is a popular sport at schools and already has a proud history. I want to encourage our young people to take part in this project when it is offered in your area. Let a healthy and active lifestyle form part of your legacy,’ added Councillor Van der Ross.
