Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration hosts Indaba 2018, 6 to 7 Dec

The Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) will host its annual CCMA Indaba as follows:

Date: 6 to 7 December 2018

Time: 9h00 – 18h00

Venue: Cape Sun Hotel, Cape Town

The Indaba creates a platform for CCMA Commissioners, staff, strategic partners and stakeholders, to discuss pertinent labour market issues. It is anticipated that the CCMA will be attended by 400 delegates, including Members of the CCMA Governing Body and Committees, CCMA Management, Commissioners and Staff, representatives of the Ministry and Department of Labour, representatives from the International Labour Organisation, sister public entities such as NEDLAC and Productivity SA, CCMA strategic partners and other invited stakeholders.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution, underpinning technological innovation, poses new challenges for the labour market. Furthermore, the legislative reforms presented by the Employment Law Amendments and the introduction of the National Minimum Wage, not only presents new jurisdictions for the CCMA, but presents new dynamics in the labour market.

Furthermore, there are fundamental judgements that have defined the labour market and shaped CCMA processes. Accordingly, the 2018 CCMA Indaba will be convened under the appropriate theme of Preparing for the New World of Work. This conference will afford the CCMA and the labour fraternity an opportunity to reflect and robustly engage on the future of work, exchanging knowledge and best practices.

In total, the 2018 CCMA Indaba constitutes a total of nine (9) plenaries across the two (2) days, to be delivered by esteemed labour law professionals. The following topics will be covered:

CCMA settlement review rate; Labour Court reviews of CCMA awards: Trends, learnings and considerations for Commissioners and the transition from the CCMA hearing rooms to the Labour Court; Significant judgments in Employment Law that impact on the labour market and CCMA processes; Assign Services Constitutional Court judgment: key issues and implications; Employment Law Amendments and the National Minimum Wage Act: Enforcement, strategic impact on the CCMA and state of readiness; Fourth Industrial Revolution: Perspectives from the International Labour Organisation; The future of work: Fourth Industrial Revolution; What is the lifespan of a CCMA award? Constitutional Court judgments analysed; and World–class Commissioners in a changing labour market and a changing world: Reflections on the Labour Dispute Resolution Programme.
