Courageous members assist a woman to give birth

South African Police Service (SAPS) members at a rural Vorstershoop police station went beyond the call of duty by assisting a woman to give birth.

Everything started at approximately 06:00 on Saturday, 11 January 2020, when a member of the community called the police and informed them about a 22-year-old woman who was writhing with labour pains. Knowing the challenges in Vorstershoop including the remoteness of the place and accessibility of community services, the employees; four Constables and a Data Typist, rushed to the woman’s place at Monotomosetlha informal settlement.

Upon realising that the woman was about to give birth, they called an ambulance. While waiting for the ambulance from Morokweng, two female Constables assisted the woman to deliver a bouncing baby girl. The woman and her baby were safely handed to Emergency Medical and Rescue Services (EMRS) officials at 09:00.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena expressed gratitude to the employees for their courageous efforts and going beyond the call of duty by assisting the woman to deliver the baby.
