Crime awareness campaign shakes community of Chris Hani district

A massive Crime Awareness Campaign took place in Komani Central Business District (CBD) under Chris Hani District today, 6th March 2021. The campaign was manned by Corporate Communication and Liaison, Visible Policing and Community Policing Forum (CPF).

Communities were addressed and sensitised about different aspects relating to Gender Based Violence and Femicide, with main focus on Domestic Violence, which is prevalent in many homesteads. The role of families and communities in the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide was explained. Substance abuse was among agenda items for the day, as it is viewed as a contributing factor to criminality, especially gender based violence and femicide in the society.

Issue of Second-Hand Goods was explained in detail, with different categories of second-hand dealers that include general dealers, auctioneers, jewellers, motor vehicle dealers, scrap metal dealers and recyclers.

Unending police killing was clearly condemned, and such act was characterized as a brutal attack against the state. The community was urged to support and work with the police in fighting crime.

Mr. Andries Schlebusch, who represented the Community Policing Forum utilised the platform to call upon the community to support the CPF in fighting crime in their respective environments. He further appreciated healthy relationship between the police and CPF in the area, and pledged to continue working tirelessly in the fight against crime. “CPF’s relations with the SAPS is very good, and have positive results. With our approach, we can continue to maintain order in our respective environments.” he said

Regulations of Disaster Management Act were monitored in the Komani CBD, with strict emphasis on social distancing, sanitizing and wearing of masks.

Police patrols that ran concurrently with the crime awareness campaign yielded positive results, and maintained order in the entire central business district on the busy Saturday.

Response by the community was astonishing, and they were impressed by the approach of the campaign.
