Last week Sunday, Mary Moodley Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) hosted Heritage Games in Benoni, Ekurhuleni Region.
Celebrated under the theme “Reclaiming, restoring and celebrating our living Heritage” the games were organised for children in Departmental institutions to showcase their talents in sport, traditional dance and indigenous games.
Speaking to Weekly Bulletin, Programme Coordinator Welile Sihewula said “there is a lot of talent in our department’s institutions. Kids from as little as 3 years of age participated in cultural dance, they sang, some were even featured in soccer and netball.”
“Every child on the day was a winner, they gave their best performances in all recreational activities,” said Sihewula.
He also urged the department to support the initiative so that it becomes an annual heritage event.
“Our kids have talent and all we must do is to nurture it. There is a lot of potential seeing from the performances
on the day.”
“When our young people are involved in sports, arts, culture and recreation, there are less chances of them getting involved in substance abuse and various social ills.
When they are physically active, they lead a healthy lifestyle as well,” a cheerful Sihewula said.
He added that it is important for children in institutions to celebrate their heritage as it gives them meaning and identity of their culture.
