The Duduza Multipurpose Centre in Ekurhuleni was abuzz with harmonious sounds as over 500 persons with disabilities took to the stage to showcase their abilities and talent.
According to the Gauteng Department of Social Development, Special Needs and Services to Families Director Khanyisile Mathebula, the day was aimed at promoting the capabilities and contributions of Persons with Disabilities, and to instill a sense of pride in them and recognizing that they are equal with the rest of all other citizens.
Addressing the Provincial Disability Eisteddfod, Mathebula said the event takes place annually as part of the celebrations of the Social Development Month in October.
“This is in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to recognise the need to promote and protect their human rights with specific reference to raise awareness throughout society, including at the family level, regarding Persons with Disabilities, and to foster respect for their rights and dignity.”
“Through this occasion, Social Development is able to combat stereotypes, prejudices and harmful practices relating to Persons with Disabilities, including those based on sex and age, in all areas of life,” said Mathebula.
She added that the department will continue to promote social interaction amongst persons with disabilities and communities as part of the key focus areas of ‘Growing Gauteng Together’.
All participants and care givers were presented with medals as an acknowledgement from the department for participating on the day.
