JOHANNESBURG, — South Africa’s water Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane, has asked for divine intervention to solve the drought-hit country’s water crisis.

At a prayer meeting at the Katlehong township, about 35 kilometres east of here, Sunday, she asked God to intervene to fill the country’s empty dams as several municipalities in Gauteng Province, the country’s most populour province, started implementig water restrictions.

Mokonyane has since announced that water supplies will be cut by 15 per cent.

Praying with members of the Incredible Happenings Church in Katlehong for more rain for the country, the Minister said people should be optimistic that the dams would be filled up again. She, however, strongly appealed to people to use water sparingly.

The Executive Mayor of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitcan Municipality of Gauteng Province, Mzwandile Masina, said the municipality had already put in place measures such as water restrictions to conserve water.
