Eastern Cape Legislature holds Taking Legislature and Parliament to the People programme, 15 to 18 Nov

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature (ECPL) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will hold an integrated Taking Legislature and Parliament to the People programme in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. The Taking Legislature and Parliament to the People programme, which entails holding a four day House Sitting outside the Bhisho and Cape Town precincts, serves as a vehicle to strengthen the oversight responsibility of the Legislature and Parliament. It further provides an opportunity for communities in the Metro and Alfred Nzo District Municipality to make their voices heard on issues relating to service delivery while participating in legislative processes.

The Programme is preceded by oversight visits by committees of the Legislature and NCOP. During the oversight visits, Members of the Provincial Legislature and NCOP Delegates interact with local communities and stakeholders to gauge the scale of service delivery issues in the area. The Legislature will focus on service delivery issues in the BCM area and the NCOP will focus in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality dealing with Education and Health issues. The committees will report their findings with recommendations for implementation to the joint House during the four-day sitting.

This Joint Sitting will bring together National, Provincial and Local spheres of government under one roof to address service delivery issues in the province. The Honourable Speaker of the ECPL Ms Noxolo Kiviet (MPL) and Honourable Chairperson of the NCOP, Ms Thandi Modise (MP) will preside over the Sitting scheduled to take place as follows:
