KING WILLIAM’S TOWN – Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga condemned gender based violence after the murder of a 38-year-old woman whose body was found strangled with multiple stabbing wounds at Mdeni location, Butterworth on Sunday, 20 June 2020.
The gruesome discovery was made by her boyfriend who became suspicious when her cell phone was continuously ringing but unanswered. He decided to visit and investigate. As he came closer to the woman’s house, he could hear the phone ringing inside when he dialled. When he opened the door he found the victim’ hands tied with stab wounds. He called the community and police were also summoned to the scene.
An off duty detective from the same locality heard about this murder and managed to trace, apprehend and interview a male suspect who was also an ex-lover of the victim. The responses he got convinced him to hand over this suspect to the detectives who were officially investigating this case.
The suspect is expected to appear at Butterworth Magistrates’ Court today, 23 June 2020 facing a charge of murder.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga sent her condolence to the family and relatives of the victim on behalf of senior police management. She also applauded Butterworth detectives for the swift arrest of the suspect. “The community response during the search was commendable. All of us must work together and do our bit to eradicate the scourge of all forms of gender based violence,” she concluded.
