Police vigilance and enhanced visibility in Nyanga continuously deliver desired results. Eleven suspects were arrested over the weekend on crimes ranging from murder, possession of illegal and prohibited firearms as well as hijacking and pointing of a firearm.
Six suspects aged between 18 and 33 are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrate Court this week for murder and possession of an illegal firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Two brothers aged 18 and 19 were arrested on Sunday, 24 March 2019, for the murder of a 31-year-old man. The suspects had allegedly assaulted the victim in the early hours of Sunday. The victim sustained head injuries and died due to the latter in Emaplangeni Crescent in Nyanga.
On the same day four other suspects aged 26, 28, 30 and 33 were arrested inside a shack in Ngulube Road in Browns Farm. Members of the Provincial Intervention Team based in Nyanga were on patrol when they noticed a suspicious man standing next to a shack who started running when he saw the police approaching, the members followed him to the shack he ran into and they found him with three other suspects. They searched the shack and found a 9mm pistol covered with a blanket. All four were arrested and detained. They will also appear in the same court once charged for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Meanwhile five other suspects aged between 21 and 29 appeared in Athlone and Wynberg Magistarte Court today facing charges of hijacking and pointing of a firearm as well as rape. Three of the suspects aged 21, 22 and 29 were arrested on Friday, 22 March 2019 hours after they hijacked a vehicle in Govan Mbeki Road in Browns Farm. The trio had allegedly pointed the victim with a firearm and hijacked his vehicle.
Meanwhile a 29-year-old suspect also appeared in the same court after he was arrested on Sunday in possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition in Crossroads. The members were on patrol when in Moya Street they saw a suspicious man who suddenly changed direction as he saw the police coming and tried to run but members apprehended him and recovered a 9mm Parabellum in his possession including 15 rounds of ammunition. The firearm serial number was filed off. A fifth suspect also appeared in Wynberg Magistrate Court for a case of rape he allegedly committed in December last year.
