Pretoria: An offender who escaped from the Rooigrond Correctional Centre in the North West has been apprehended, following a manhunt by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).

According to South African Government News Agency, DCS National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale announced inmate Edward Khomotso Madiba's apprehension during a media briefing. Madiba, who escaped from the facility while being detained in single cells for a further charge related to a previous escape, is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and parole violation.

Thobakgale confirmed that the escapee was apprehended within 72 hours, emphasizing the department's commitment to trace, apprehend, and return offenders who escape from lawful custody back to the correctional system. He stated that they will not relent in their pursuit of those who undermine the integrity of the correctional system.

The National Commissioner explained that Madiba moved through various locations, including Borakalalo Game Reserve, Lebotloane, and Damonsville, before being apprehended in Brits at a flat. The department's tracing capabilities, supported by technology and cooperation with other law enforcement partners, were crucial in tracking his movements.

Madiba has now been transferred to the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre C-Max in Pretoria, where he remains in custody.

Thobakgale emphasized that Madiba's apprehension does not halt the internal investigation into the circumstances leading to his escape. At least eight officials have been suspended pending the conclusion of internal processes. He asserted that appropriate action will be taken if wrongdoing, negligence, or failure to comply with prescribed procedures is established.

The department will continue to strengthen security measures, improve operational readiness, hold officials accountable, and collaborate with law enforcement partners to maintain the integrity of the correctional system. Thobakgale reassured the public that the department is at work, and those who escape or assist in escapes will face legal consequences.
