The Eskom Development Foundation has donated electrical equipment to Mamellong Comprehensive School in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.

“This contribution by the Eskom Foundation is aimed at improving the quality of education. It is envisaged that the equipment will help the school’s technical learners realise their true potential and widen the scope of potential careers they could pursue,” said Eskom in a statement on Sunday.

The school accommodates learners from Tsakane and neighbouring Duduza and is the only school in the area that offers technical subjects.

The school, which started operating in 1986, has four workshops which offer Grade 11 and 12 technical learners the following streams: fitting and turning, welding and metalworking, woodwork as well as electrical and engineering graphics and design.

The school’s educators were also trained in using all the equipment to ensure optimal usage of the equipment.

The foundation’s acting Chief Executive Officer Cecil Ramonotsi said the organisation, through its various CSI initiatives, is committed to making a meaningful contribution towards uplifting the standard of living for as many South Africans as possible.

“One of the most pressing challenges facing South Africa today is a shortage of skilled scientists, engineers, artisans and technicians. The scarcity of these skills happens partly due to a lack of laboratories and equipment in schools, as well as access to quality learning materials and educational support.

“This programme is well on its way towards addressing these challenges. We believe that through this donation, we have improved the knowledge and skills of the educators and everything will ultimately work towards enhancing the learners’ results,” said Ramonotsi.
