Ndwedwe: The eThekwini Municipality has announced that its disaster management teams are actively addressing the aftermath of severe rains that resulted in widespread flooding and damage across parts of Durban over the weekend. The municipality reported that teams were dispatched immediately after the storm, which left several areas with submerged roads, fallen trees, and damaged vehicles.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Durban Central and Southern regions faced the most severe impact, with 22 incidents reported, particularly in Chatsworth and Morningside. The flooding and fallen trees caused significant traffic disruptions. In the Western region, 13 incidents were recorded, with Westville being one of the most affected areas. Teams are currently engaged in clearing debris, managing waterlogged roads, and assessing damage to safeguard residents.
The Northern region reported seven incidents, with Newlands West experiencing the worst of the storm. Emergency crews continue to address flooding and other storm-related hazards in these areas. The municipality has urged residents to exercise caution, avoid flooded roads, and report hazards such as fallen trees, damaged power lines, or blocked routes through official channels.
Motorists have been strongly advised against attempting to cross flooded roads, as water levels may be more dangerous than they appear.
